Department of Obstetrics and Gynecological Nursing
The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecological Nursing focuses on providing comprehensive care to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period, as well as addressing various gynecological conditions. The department is dedicated to preparing students to deliver safe, competent, and compassionate maternal and women’s health care in both hospital and community settings.
Students are trained in antenatal, intranatal, and postnatal care, along with the management of normal and high-risk pregnancies. The department emphasizes family-centered care, reproductive health, and women’s wellness, ensuring that students develop the skills required to support mothers and families effectively.
Through theoretical instruction and clinical exposure, students gain knowledge in midwifery practices, newborn care, and management of gynecological disorders, while maintaining dignity, privacy, and ethical standards.
Objectives of the Department
The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecological Nursing aims to:
- Develop knowledge of maternal health, reproductive health, and gynecological disorders and their management.
- Enhance skills in antenatal, intra-natal, postnatal, and newborn care. Promote safe motherhood practices and family-centered care.
- Develop competencies in handling normal and high-risk pregnancies and obstetric emergencies. Foster communication skills, ethical practices, and professional responsibility in women’s health care.
Departmental Activities
- 1. The department observes important health days such as Safe Motherhood Day, World Breastfeeding Week, and International Women’s Day through awareness programs, exhibitions, and health education sessions.
- 2. Students are posted in antenatal wards, labour rooms, postnatal wards, and gynecology units, where they gain hands-on experience in maternal and newborn care, assisting deliveries, and managing obstetric and gynecological cases.
- 3. Students are posted in various maternity centres along with Government Medical College and Hospital, Namakkal for the clinical training.
- 4. The department conducts health education programs for women in hospitals and communities focusing on maternal nutrition, antenatal care, family planning, breastfeeding, and prevention of reproductive health problems.
